The Importance of Family in Pregnancy After Loss

Grandparents Love

I’m over at Pregnancy After Loss Support today talking about the notion of families.

“They wanted to be the strong ones, and at the same time, they were mourning the loss as well. Turns out, our parents were on the same roller coaster ride as us, just not in the front car.”

  1. Familial support is a mixed thing during infertility/RPl and PAL. A lot of it has to do with family relationships and support prior to these traumas. If strong, incorporating them into the journey is more of a possibility and can be beneficial. In other cases, though, where there is family dysfunction, inclusion and the degree will definitely differ.

The big take-home message, then, becomes self care and recognizing boundaries for support. Too often people facing traumas like infertility/RPL and PAL will find themselves offer emotional support to family members at their own expense. Self care should not be sacrificed because though family may not mean to, they can fail to see the true drain that the person/couple involved is facing.
